Nothing to see here...

by Anthony Anderberg

Someday we'll hit 30Gbps, but not today - the massive spike in MICE traffic in the graphs at 2am this morning is just an artifact of the daylight savings switch. It shouldn't affect the long-term trend graphs, but if it does I'll tweak them a little as needed. Easy alarms are the best kind... OSX Upgrade Release

by Justin Krejci

I am guessing the release of the free OSX upgrade is related to the sudden spike in MICE traffic again. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/os-x-mavericks/id675248567 It might not be a bad idea to monitor your own network pipes for signs of bandwidth contention with the release of a free multi gig upgrade for OSX. ######################################################################## To unsubscribe from the MICE-DISCUSS list, click the following link: http://lists.iphouse.net/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=MICE-DISCUSS&A=1

ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) is the international multi-stakeholder organization charged with the technical management of the names and numbers that tag our Internet traffic for safe delivery on the Net. The BIG NEWS from ICANN is that BIG CHANGE is on the way. The familiar small familyof top level domain names such as .COM, .NET, .GOV, .EDU, will grow to 1200 top level domain names in the next few years. Over the past 20 years, very few names were added but in the next year alone about 500 additions are planned. Is this good news? Is this bad news? Is the glass half full or half empty? Who will benefit? Who might lose? How might this affect your ISP? How might this affect telecommunications providers? Will trust be affected? It looks like the Gigapop traffic has dropped in the past hour or two, I'm not sure if it's because their cluster is picking up more load like David mentioned or because of some time-of-day shift in user's connections. It looks like Hurricane traffic has picked up some, currently at about 5G egress. The Akamai cluster and Core-to-CNS links are running at about 7G right now and I'm not seeing any queue drops. I need to talk with Mike about moving the cross connect. If necessary I think I could do it yet today. But probably later this week or next week if that is ok. I'd be happy to move the GigaPOP to the main switch, I'll look at getting a SFP+. I think I have one I can borrow from our Infinera equipment as well. However, this is just iOS7, this happened with iOS6 last year too, at first we pulled it from the MICE Akamai nodes and then it shifted to our local nodes. I'm not sure why, but that's the way it seems to work. Thanks On 9/18/13 16:14 , Jeremy Lumby wrote: > The problem is X2 versus SFP+ optics. Besides the large flow of Akamai->Gigapop/State of MN, it looks just like going from Akamai's spikes, that the next biggest consumers all around of Akamai output is about 600-700Mbps all on the main switch, unless that ~2Gbps spike out to HE was related to Akamai traffic. I don't think HE is too big a factor, but Gigapop & Akamai should probably live on one switch, and we should talk to Akamai to double up the connection. -- Doug McIntyre <merlyn(a)iphouse.net> -- ipHouse/Goldengate/Bitstream/ProNS -- Network Engineer/Provisioning/Jack of all Trades ######################################################################## To unsubscribe from the MICE-DISCUSS list, click the following link: http://lists.iphouse.net/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=MICE-DISCUSS&A=1

Re: MICE Congestion Issues

At the peak traffic levels (~9.75G) the main MICE switch was showing egress queue drops so that link is definitely constraining full use of the exchange. Moving the GigaPoP and Hurricane's links to the main switch seems like the cleanest technical solution now that we've got plenty of 10G interfaces on the main switch. I see the link from the Akamai cluster was above 9.5G too. It's possible that could be the next bottleneck for full utilization of the exchange (and of Akamai's cluster). We certainly know that there will be more iOS upgrades in the future.
