Enventis Maintenance

by Jake Lubitz

Greeting Tonight (12/17 into 12/18) we are planning on doing some maintenance work on our equipment that connects to the MICE Juniper router. This is in preparation to upgrade our link to the MICE router to 10Gbps. As a result, traffic (BGP) from us to the MICE router will drop out tonight. We hope to have everything back up by tomorrow (12/18) afternoon. Please let us know if there are any issues or objections to this maintenance work. Thanks in advance. Keep in mind we have no formally defined admins, so if you say admin you'll need to lay that out as well. Sure. And thanks for the call this morning, I appreciated it. When we define admins they should be folks with enable on the gear who have it to fix problems. There should also be a basic expectation of privacy of that data. Admins emailing. me and saying "Hey! Where's your port upgrade!" is fine, but emailing the entire list with that is probably not ok. That should apply across the organization. This would be a fairly standard interpretation of how things are done at IXP's in North America and depending upon the final language I would be pleased to support. As far as my data being "public" I'm going to disagree with the board that any member with a login != public so I'm still asking that they remove my graph until we have a better solution. I'm a former MRTG user and maker of pages to monitor things with SNMP, I'm well aware of how to make this work and I'm happy to volunteer to help manage the cacti instance if it would be helpful. There are multiple good reasons for this approach. Unfortunately, the UG meeting conflicts with my Super Bowl vacation or I would come to do a presentation for you on this. Perhaps next one. I hope this helps to clarify and move us along. And as soon as we get this resolved I'll start working to add my second 10G. :-) Best, -M< ######################################################################## To unsubscribe from the MICE-DISCUSS list, click the following link: http://lists.iphouse.net/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=MICE-DISCUSS&A=1

Re: Port Anonymity

by Anthony Anderberg

Anytime today (11th) or Friday (13th) are fine for me if anyone wanted to have a call. I'd agree that Dave did a good job of summarizing the issues and Richard's responses are a reasonable evolution in our shared MICE journey. I'd thought about a combination of ASN/member specific passwords and leaving the graphs open to members but I'm not sure that would meet Martin's needs, especially in the nirvana of the future when his competition might also be MICE members. Obviously under a "hidden graph" scenario members couldn't troubleshoot traffic bottlenecks across MICE themselves and people would need to continue to have reasonable expectations about volunteer administrator's abilities to respond. Part of the support for the current policy came from member's experiences of being frustrated by their provider's opaqueness in situations like the last iOS upgrade, but I think everyone understands that some of Akamai's needs are a little different. One loose end: Doug - can you remove that posting (or perhaps just the graph image) from the mailing list archive? The "anonymous port" idea isn't a bad one either, but it doesn't seem as clean to me in terms of maintenance simplicity and perhaps in terms of anonymity given the current port count and comparative traffic volumes. Having said that I'll certainly work to implement whatever the group's new direction is, appreciate everyone's thoughts and support. Graphs are public, unless that network has asked to opt-out. If a network has opted-out, the graph is hidden from the public ("guest") user account. The aggregate graph (the one from the home page) is public, but should not separate traffic by colors or otherwise. That graph shall not show a "Current" or "Last" value. No other aggregates shall be public without further discussion. (A graph of a port facing a remote switch is not an "aggregate" graph for this purpose; it's a "network" graph.) > 5. What is the proper security for the graphs and statistics? Reasonable passwords for the non-public Cacti accounts. If the managers of the ix can't access the graphs we can't provide them if requested. Marty, could you be specific in your request and make a suggestion? Jay, Right on with the agreement. It does say that we may ask for MRTG graph data related to ports statistics. It also says we expect confidentiality. Our port data is confidential. The MICE Board signed this agreement with us. If we take our port down to the wider audience like we have gracefully requested, we're happy to discuss what the objective is and how we may be helpful. I'll be honest, I doubt that the outcome is "sure, display our data to anyone with a login", but it is likely to be reasonable and inline with North American IXP norms. NETNOD is in Norway and Mice is in North America. NETNOD is also orders of magnitude larger than MICE. That's not the solution. You're saying that Akamai can move to another port and we won't put a name on that port's graph? Wouldn't it be really obvious that the unlabeled graph that's just started sending/receiving traffic is the one network (Akamai) that just disappeared from the set of labeled graphs? Plus, until there's another network that opts out, it's still obvious which port is Akamai. And if that network isn't of a similar size, even then it still be obvious. I don't see any reason to move (or unlabel) anything. If you want to grant these requests, just stop showing Akamai's port's graph to the guest user in Cacti and remove it from the weathermap. Access to the Cacti admin interface should be along the same lines as access to manage the actual MICE switches: it's privileged and comes with discretion requirements. Not every member has access to the switches' management interface(s) nor Cacti admin today. I have neither, for example. -- Richard ######################################################################## To unsubscribe from the MICE-DISCUSS list, click the following link: http://lists.iphouse.net/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=MICE-DISCUSS&A=1

Port Anonymity

by Reid Fishler

Hello MICE Persons- The SC has discussed recent requests for protection of port statistics, and we have decided to adapt the method that Netnod in Sweden tackles this issue. At any time, any IX member may choose to make their port anonymous in the graphs and logs. Because the ports are currently labeled, we will allow allow members, upon request, to move to another port at the time that they remove the identity from their port. This will allow any network that does not wish its statistics to be public to be satisfied, while allowing the members to see have access to statistics, in this, a cooperative exchange without dedicated staff. Any members who wish to have their port anonymized, please contact me and I will make sure that it is done. Also, a reminder: port statistics of other members are NOT for sharing outside of your own company without permission from the other involved networks. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to post. Re: Is Today The Test

by Anthony Anderberg

Just so we're all clear: The public graph is the aggregate graph that gets exported and linked from our home page. It's a stacked graph where everyone's piece is the same green color, partially for simplicity but mostly to obscure the details. The graph Frank posted is a similar stacked graph, but I've broken the traffic out a little (also its ingress vs egress as a way of checking accuracy.) This graph and the more detailed weathermap are password protected, although admittedly the password is not particularly robust. As Steve mentioned over the course of a couple UG meetings we'd decided that members should be able to see the exchange's traffic patterns, as they say sunlight can cure a great many things. To the original question, it looks like a number of us are up this week – I was thinking it might be holiday shopping. If anyone is on from Enventis they might want to consider upgrading their port, looks like it's almost at capacity in the evening hours. just FYI -- ISOC on IXPs

by Mike O'Connor

hi all, thought you might be interested in this piece about the economic impact of IXPs in Latin America. mikey http://www.internetsociety.org/news/new-study-reveals-how-internet-exchange… New Study Reveals How Internet Exchange Points Spur Internet Growth in Latin America 03 December 2013 Joint Internet Society and Universidad de San Andrés report demonstrates significant cost and performance gains from IXP development in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and Ecuador [Montevideo, Uruguay] – The Internet Society recently published the results of a study that demonstrates the far-reaching economic and societal benefits of establishing Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) in emerging markets. The study, commissioned by the Internet Society and conducted by Professor Hernan Galperin of the Universidad de San Andrés in Argentina, examined the critical cost and performance benefits of IXPs in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Ecuador – countries on the leading edge of Internet growth in Latin America. Analogous with the role that international airports play in airline traffic, IXPs serve as critical hubs for data traffic exchange in the global Internet infrastructure. Over 350 IXPs around the world enable local Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and Internet backbone carriers to efficiently and cost-effectively exchange Internet traffic. Many emerging markets do not have well-established IXPs, forcing domestic Internet traffic onto long-distance international links, resulting in significantly higher costs and quality of service challenges. This new study identifies the positive impact that IXPs have made, including reduced telecommunications costs, faster and better local data exchange, and local technical capacity development. For example: To date, nine IXPs are operational in Argentina as part of the Cabase system that was created in 1998, connecting over 80 network operators. Internet transit costs have been reduced from USD $500 per Mbps per month in one city to about USD $40 per Mbps per month. Service providers have been able to expand their networks and quality of service. In 2004, the Comitê Gestor da Internet (CGI) launched an initiative called PTT Metro to create IXPs across Brazil, starting with their first IXP in São Paulo. As of April 2013, there were 22 IXPs in operation, covering 16 of Brazil’s 26 states. On aggregate, the IXPs associated with the PTT Metro initiative are exchanging over 170Gbps at peak hours, and providing better and faster connectivity to regions of Brazil that had poor Internet service. In Ecuador, international transit costs hover around USD $100 per Mbps per month. Local traffic can be exchanged at the IXP in Quito (NAP.EC) for as little as USD $1 per Mbps per month. Without an IXP, operators would exchange local traffic through international transit routes and the additional wholesale costs for local ISPs would be USD $7.2 million per year. The Colombian exchange point, NAP Colombia, started in 2000 in response to frequent disruptions in the domestic backhaul network and international links. By exchanging traffic locally, and later by installing content caches at the IXP, local ISPs were able to reduce their dependence on international routes, thus reducing costs and, most importantly, increasing service reliability. “This study highlights the critical role that IXPs are playing in Latin America – from human capacity and network development to better quality of service and increased uptake of services,” said Sebastian Bellagamba, Regional Bureau Director for Latin America and the Caribbean at the Internet Society. “Offering more than just cost and performance benefits, well-run IXPs serve as a catalyst to dramatically enrich a country’s Internet ecosystem, opening a new world of possibilities with comparably minimal investment. We appreciate the collaboration with Professor Galperin and hope that this study will help inform the dialogue among government, business, and technology leaders of emerging countries to show them the benefits that IXPs can provide for developing partnerships for Internet growth in the region.” Lead author of the study Hernan Galperin stated, “This report shows the important role that IXPs have played in the development of the Internet in Latin America. This role is likely to become more important as countries in the region address existing challenges such as network security, the improvement in the quality of services, and the reduction in access prices.” The study was conducted as part of the Internet Society’s Internet Traffic Exchange Programme. This programme aims to foster robust, efficient, and cost-effective Internet interconnection environments in emerging economies, and furthers the Internet Society’s overall mission to promote the open development, evolution, and use of the Internet for the benefit of all people throughout the world. The full study in English and Spanish is available for download at http://www.internetsociety.org/doc/connectivity-latin-america-and-caribb.... Funding for this study was provided in part by Google under the IXP Toolkit & Best Practices Grant Project. With its principled vision and substantial technological foundation, the Internet Society promotes open dialogue on Internet policy, technology, and future development among users, companies, governments, and other organizations.
