To be clear my messages are NOT intended to be a downvote for the proposal, I’m just intending to foster discussion. I don't think https://www.micemn.net/technical.html needs major changes. Maybe change “Operators are responsible for the costs of operating their remote switch and the links to the core switch.” to “Operators are responsible for the costs of operating their remote switch and the links [TOWARDS] the core switch.” I think it's worthwhile acknowledging the distance to the proposed remote switch, the presumed lack of redundancy in the proposed backhaul. re: reliability: Is the lack of redundancy an accurate assumption, or would this be a protected wave? AS3128 has some experience in this area [AS3128 assists in operations of a 1000mi+ fiber ring for multistate research and education, including through Minneapolis and Minnesota] so I wanted to ack that in general with distance comes decreased reliability, and eBGP stability is important since topology changes lead to packet loss during convergence. I acknowledge we already have peers at MICE that are extensions out of Chicago [Google comes to mind]. I am also aware of the options that, for example, AS32621 provides in extending folks to Seattle IX as an opt-in value add, which is contrast to the ‘auto opt-in’ stance MICE route reflectors users enjoy. re: distance: based on geography or your home AS stance, this change could result in a longer RTT between some networks. AS3128 appears at exchanges other than MICE. But if you are in this club you are probably aware that you already have this potential problem and either you deal with it or not. Admittedly, our operations are less algorithmic and more reactionary. So if I were to focus discussions on either distance or reliability, I would focus more on reliability. Ultimately with MICE per-AS BGP community support, the publication of https://www.micemn.net/participants.html, and mailing list announcements of when new peers are brought onboard, AS3128 has all the tools it needs ==IF== we need to make a traffic engineer decision, which is great. Our agreement with MN VOIP would be for transport from KC to Minneapolis. If the link became congested, we would order additional capacity. If MN VoIP could t provide it then we would get it someplace else. In the end, our intention is to be congestion free from KC to the MICE core. There are currently two set up like this IIRC. SFN in Albert Lea and Compudyne in Duluth. Compudyne Duluth sits behind their remote in 511. I've always taken the congestion free requirement to be all the way to the core switch. My reading of above implies the current policy assumes a remote switch will connect to the MICE core directly. Yes, Prime Video has contracted TeleGeography to survey a group of ISPs including some MICE participants. Prime Video is working with AWS and a number of CDN partners to acquire edge capacity for Thursday Night Football. We are trying to understand from the ISP perspective how those CDNs deliver traffic to ISP customers in an effort to serve traffic as efficiently as possible and ensure a quality customer experience. Any ISP that want to validate a contact from TeleGeograpy or any other contact related to Prime Video can reach us via the alias primevideo-isp-us(a)amazon.com. This survey only covers a subset of US ASNs, so networks that were not surveyed should feel free to reach out to us and we can provide additional information regarding our plans for Thursday Night Football. ==== I don't have any visibility into who reads the primevideo-isp-us(a)amazon.com alias so no idea whether it is a useful path for following up on peering or not. My guess is that the regional alias listed in peeringDB, peering-amer(a)amazon.com is the best route. I have been told by a couple folks reasonably close to the peering team at Amazon that they realize that they have sucked at communication and hope to suck less based on comments from 3 individuals over the last 9 months or so. Definitely legit and definitely worth pursuing additional connectivity with Amazon and CDNs that Amazon will use to distribute their NFL streaming content. We have peering active with Amazon at four IX locations (including MICE) and are trying to get some PNIs with them now too. https://aws.amazon.com/peering/locations/ This page lists Cologix Minneapolis as a site where interconnection can happen. FYI, inbound Google [15169] issues via MICE for AS3128 that started ~15:47 CST

Hi everyone- FYI in case others are impacted. We had many reports inside AS3128 of problems with Google services [AS15169] beginning around 15:47 CST. I won't bore folks with all details but in short, we observed what looked like a hashing issue. For example, our ip w.x.y.z could ping 8.8.8.8, but not w.x.y.z+1. I was able to reproduce easily myself with 8.8.4.4. Our primary outbound path to 8.8.4.0/24 was MICE. Swinging our outbound path didn't fix anything, but I was able to work around our issues at ~17:38CST by sending 0:15169 to the MICE RR. The relief was basically immediate, so the problem appears to have been inbound from Google via MICE. Hard to say where the issue is/was. I am on a remote switch, but no other issues with other MICE ASN were reported inside AS3128, FWIW. I would be interested to hear if anyone else had/has a problem or if anyone has a suggestion on how to make positive contact with Google on this as we are not direct GGC or direct PNI users. For example, is peering(a)google.com my best/only bet? I know some have suggested IRC in the past, I do not run in those circles but I guess I will learn to if that's my only real option.
