The only routes I'm seeing from Zayo that I'm not accepting are ones that I have a better route to through MICE or a GigaPOP participant. Also, I'm not seeing any routes from AS33362 that are going via Level3, Cogent, TWTC, TransitRail or Internet2 CPS, our upstream Transit providers. Re: Mice routes via Northern Lights GigaPoP

Sorry, I'm out of the country and a bit behind on email. We are announcing the routes we learn from MICE to Zayo and VISI, two commercial peers we had prior to the creation of MICE. I've been meaning to contact them and suggest that they peer directly at MiCE. We also announce all of the GigaPOP R&E participants, the state, MnSCU, many of the private colleges, much of K12 in the state, North Dakota Higher Ed and K12, Iowa State and much of ICN, etc... I believe VISI is actually accepting the routes and that Zayo is not accepting the routes. As was discussed on the list I believe they have old static prefix filters in place and are not accepting the routes. I've also been meaning to contact them about that too. But it has been a busy summer, and I haven't had a chance to get to it. I'm back in the office next week and I'll try to get around to contacting Zayo. Probably later in the week, as I know I'm going to have a bunch of stuff waiting for me when I get into the office. :) On 8/31/11 15:28 CDT, Jeremy Lumby wrote: > I have a case where I am seeing 199.199.0.0/16 in BGP via MICE/Northern Lights GigaPoP. Re: Mice routes via Northern Lights GigaPoP

Yeahhh... It's by choice-- there are (old/outdated) static prefix filters on Zayo's peering session to the Gigapop. With the addition of MICE to AS57-- there's a lot more diverse traffic headed that direction than there used to be. I'll start a dialog with my contacts over there and see if we can get them to take more of a standard "transit" approach to that session. We have the same problem with our (relatively new) IPv4 prefix...MICE out...Level3/XO return... ~Matthew On Aug 31, 2011, at 3:28 PM, Jeremy Lumby wrote: > I have a case where I am seeing 199.199.0.0/16 in BGP via MICE/Northern Lights GigaPoP. "carrier choice" verbiage

by Ryan Goldberg

I've got a customer moving into a building where the building owners/management is attempting to enforce carrier exclusivity; they are in bed with another carrier. I already have the customer's other two sites on-net. This would be a third, new site. My fiber is just outside of the building, and I want to be in it. The owners of the company (my customer) have a pretty strong hand, and are looking for verbiage to add to the lease basically stating they can use whatever carrier they want. Does anyone have something like this handy? Thanks! Might be coincidence, but we had a big fiber cut (AT&T/TA 288 ct + DOT 36 ct) in the Madison area yesterday afternoon. I know BoreasNet got taken out headed up towards EauClaire, so maybe they are in that same fiber cable headed that way on the Interstate. I would *hope* that 174 isn't single-pathed back down to Chicago on that cable, but I guess it wouldn't surprise me :-) On Aug 24, 2011, at 9:45 AM, Reid Knuttila wrote: > We had our link to Cogent in 511 go down yesterday, Aug 23 , at 14:39:07 . Re: cogent

That matches up close with a fiber cut we had yesterday down here in Madison, WI. We saw an interruption about 14:45 and then a complete outage of our long-haul fiber at 15:11. This is a fiber path that was originally installed by AT&T, Touch America, and Velocita. Maybe Cogent is using some of this fiber to get from Chicago to Minneapolis? Our pairs were restored early this morning. Jeff On Wed, Aug 24, 2011 at 02:45:53PM +0000, Reid Knuttila wrote: > We had our link to Cogent in 511 go down yesterday, Aug 23 , at 14:39:07 . Because they had a fiber cut. But they seem to be back up as of about 16:00, they look normal again, and seem to be announcing all their routes into the exchange again. I'm not sure what was going on with their port measurements though, it was probably a measurement glitch. Because, I don't think the exchange was actually sending 500Mb of real traffic at them when their link was down and there doesn't seem an inbound source of the traffic on any other port. So that sounds like a measurement glitch to me. Dave, A CNS fiber that leads to the 511 Building was cut at 9:52AM this morning. (The redundant link isn't expect to be done for another few months.... Arrghh). It looks like we had an issue with IPv6 sessions after the cut this morning. We think the issue is resolved. If you are having trouble passing IPv6 across the fabric let me know. Akamai Agreement

by Jay Hanke

MICE has executed the agreement with Akamai for the dedicated cluster peered directly to MICE. Akamai will have a 10GE connection to the main switch. A special thanks to US Internet for providing bandwidth to feed the cluster and to FWR for working with us on the space and power. We will need some help with the installation when the equipment arrives. We expect to be operational around September 1st! -- Jay Hanke CTO, CCIE #19093 Mankato Networks LLC 320 East Liberty Street Mankato, MN 56001-3838 Google 530-618-2398 jayhanke(a)mankatonetworks.net http://www.mankatonetworks.com ######################################################################## To unsubscribe from the MICE-DISCUSS list, click the following link: http://lists.iphouse.net/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=MICE-DISCUSS&A=1

I'm not sure if it is the best strategy (feel free to tell me what I've gotten wrong), but it has worked out well so far. We mainly do this to improve the service for our customers: 1) We want to be sure that our customers can get a minimum MTU of 1500 (and 9000 jumbo) for their connections. We see this now and then in customer technical requirements for ethernet circuits. By increasing our MTU, I don't have to worry about the various encapsulation methods that we might use internally for them (MPLS, 802.1q tunneling, etc) reducing their available MTU below the limit; 2) It allows our customers to do their own encapsulation (L2TPv3, MPLS) in addition to ours and still keep 1500/9000 for their payload; 3) In the past we have seen vendor/customer confusion where they believe that MTU and ethernet frame size are the same, by having a little "cush" factor, we don't have to worry about being the bad guy who clobbered their packets if there is terminology confusion; 4) If our customers use Path MTU Discovery they can take advantage of larger MTU sizes and get greater efficiency for their traffic; 5) Many of the Cisco switches require a reboot to change MTU settings. By setting them to their maximum during the initial install we don't have to worry about a service-affecting reboot later if we need to increase it; 6) It doesn't seem to break anything. :-) Steve ######################################################################## To unsubscribe from the MICE-DISCUSS list, click the following link: http://lists.iphouse.net/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=MICE-DISCUSS&A=1

Why would you change this? I am hoping I am mising some Internet sekret. For our VMware emphemeral networking we use 1528. Our network by default is 1500. And if I were using jumbo framing, I'd use 9000.
