MICE Voting Requirements

We have a SC election scheduled for our meeting Wednesday 2/20/2013. To vote in the election each Member must have one Established BGP session across the MICE fabric prior to the start of the meeting at 4 PM. Each directly connected ASN to the MICE fabric receives a vote. Members may vote remotely by emailing their vote to a Steering Committee member prior to the meeting. MICE renumbering project -- final cleanup 1/26/2013

I guess this slipped off my radar, meant to do this sooner. On Saturday, 1/26/2013 between 11:30PM and midnight, I'll be doing the final cleanup of renumbering on the MICE route reflector servers for the MICE renumbering project. This will be removing any trace of the old IP addressing off there, and rebooting each server in turn to clear everything out, while also reconfiguring BIRD to drop the original session, only leaving the new ones going. Then we can return the loan of the IP address space back to Airstream and close out this project. Let me know if there are any questions. 2013 MICE SC Elections

We have one seat opening up on the MICE steering committee. We are looking for volunteers! As a member of the SC you'll oversee the business and marketing aspects of the MICE exchange including organizing the UG meetings. This is a 3 year term. The workload is fairly light but very important and rewarding. SC members do NOT need to be MICE members. Previous SC members may not run for the SC for 1 year after their term expires. There will be one election per year going forward. Sure, if you would check out power, network connectivity, etc. What is on the screen. The 2nd route server is up just fine. HCMC is looking at connecting sometime this calendar year if logistics work out on our end. I'd be more specific but we're too early in the process to know for sure at this point. Obviously I'll update once we have a more specific idea for time frame Also would be helpful to have an idea of yearly maintenance costs up front and a valid Org/LLC to bill our finance dept so they can cut a PO for them if needed. If the business structure were in place on MICE's end I don't think it would be difficult for us to justify at least $1k a year in maintenance to the cooperative for a 1Gb connection. I suspect you would find similar responses from other enterprises our size. I haven't read all the posts on this yet but can I suggest a maintenance model that charges the first year of maintenance up front and then ongoing yearly (plus obviously the optics) with a different rate for "enterprise" connections vs ISP/CDN/Regional network connections with low or no costs to ISP/CDN/Regional network connections or maybe just initial one time per port costs for them. It seems to me that the value of a peering cooperative to its members is the number of available peer connections to other local networks with the value of the peer exchange being tipped towards having more ISP/CDN connections. I think this would continue to encourage more ISP/CDN connections (which is what most of the network consists of now) while providing for the ongoing financial needs of the cooperative with connections from Orgs who aren't just comparing the value of the cooperative directly to the cost of wholesale IP transit like us. We spend a lot of money on point to point vpn tunnels between us and other peers in our sector and it would advantageous for us to encourage them to join the cooperative as it would allow us to drop considerable monthly P2P circuit costs while increasing available bandwidth vs our current P2P setup. Many of them already have a presence in 511 already (IE: Allina, UHG, MNet, Fairview, City of MPLS, Hennepin County Gov) that I've noticed during a short tour and I suspect some of the vendors we have circuits to may also have a presence (Phillips, Cerner, GE) in 511 as well. It seems to me that the goal right now is to grow the cooperative as much as possible by keeping the cost of entry very cheap or free to ISP/CDN/Regional networks to encourage growth and dare I say it "synergy" that results in bringing in enterprise connections to fund the cooperative ongoing. Just a thought, maybe its been discussed in some form before but thought it might be useful input. Last I heard Integra was going to wait to connect after the holidays, and Netflix was looking at Q1 of this year. Please let me know if anyone has any updates. I also remember something along the lines of maintenance fees going into effect this year. Has anyone settled on a number yet? We will recover some next week after New Years. But the Residence Halls are closed until just the weekend before class starts back up on January 22, so our traffic draw won't fully recover until late January. We were regularly well above a Gig in early December and Late November, and barely braking 300 to 400Mb this week. 1) Some parties don't like peering, and were forced to peer due to some legacy agreement, or because they bought someone who did peer, and now they are stuck. 2) Some companies feel that traffic needs to be equal in BOTH directions in order to increase a peer, not just 1. 3) Some companies are out of peering capacity in many cities, and what you have is what you can get. 4) Some companies forget (yes, really) that they peer with you, and if you have to contact them for more peering, they yank the peering and start a sales process. This is just some of what I know has happened with various companies in the past... Could you mention a couple hypothetical situations to help some of the less experienced members better understand some of the issues.
