We don't currently have any direct investment in MICE, but I don't ever recall a firm plan being presented and agreed upon on the list. It appears as though the switch migration and IP assignment work was unilaterally decided and things 'just happened.' We also shut sessions down this morning before the maintenance, and plan on bringing them back up sometime after the maintenance completion announcement is sent. Also, after the surprise maintenance announcement last night, I decided to skim the MICE-DISCUSS list and found the re-numbering discussion. I didn't see any sort of plan come out of it, except that it would be a generally bad idea to combine both maintenances together. I am not running V6, so I did not follow if a consensus was reached, however for V4 everyone agreed with 206.108.255.0/24 keeping the last octet the same as currently assigned. ________________________________ From: MICE Discuss [mailto:MICE-DISCUSS@LISTS.IPHOUSE.NET] On Behalf Of Justin Krejci Sent: Thursday, August 30, 2012 10:16 AM To: MICE-DISCUSS(a)LISTS.IPHOUSE.NET Subject: Re: [MICE-DISCUSS] MICE Traffic Drops What IP addresses did you use? Yeah, I was thinking of that issue as well. Perhaps subinterfaces could be used like int gig 0/0 ip address 69.147.218.100/24 int gig 0/0.0 ip address 206.108.255.100/24 router bgp 65500 neighbor 69.147.218.1 update-source gig0/0 neighbor 206.108.255.1 update-source gig0/0.0 but I don't have anything to test that out with right now. (not using cisco to talk to MICE right now). But I think my two bilateral peers can probably wait for a renumber at some future time as it is. > Hmm... I assume the BIRD configuration allows you to specify source > IP's to be used for each peer? It looks like 'router id' is allowed per AS peer. You've also got to duplicate ALL of your peer BGP sessions beforehand as well. Why? Well, I don't believe Cisco can initiate a BGP session on a secondary address so once a $C router switches their primary and secondary, they cannot initiate a BGP session. Not a problem yet. What about when the next one does it? Suddenly neither of the Cisco devices can peer with each other.. I've not been through an exchange re-address, but given this limitation, I foresee many problems and the idea of a "flag day" much more appealing - luckily though, most participants are using the route server. Easiest migration is to leave the last octet the same for everything. Quick regex replace and your old BGP configs have been copied to the new address range. If you start messing with the assigned last octets, it's just an added headache.
