How does the community feel about something other than cacti, so you don’t have to click 8000 times when an interface changes? :) Observium could do the same thing here (perhaps with even more information than we have now), and aggregate could automatically be generated based on an interface description tag (i.e.: “Peering: SomeISP [10g]” ) I would happily volunteer VM/time/effort to help make this morebetter. -- Andrew Hoyos hoyosa@gmail.com

Observium could do the same thing here (perhaps with even more information than we have now), and aggregate could automatically be generated based on an interface description tag (i.e.: “Peering: SomeISP [10g]” )
I would happily volunteer VM/time/effort to help make this morebetter.
I am certainly a fan of this system when compared to cacti. For those who have not used it, once you add the host it pretty much auto discovers everything and stays up to date. The interface description parsing bit that Andrew mentioned is especially nice. PHP Weathermap is currently integrating with Cacti, there is a way to do that with Observium as well, but requires some pointing and clicking (or manual file manipulation). -- Chris Wopat Network Engineer, WiscNet wopat@wiscnet.net 608-210-3965
Can Observium produce aggregate graphs? I was googling but found mixed answers to the question. On Wed, Mar 29, 2017 at 9:03 AM, Chris Wopat <wopat@wiscnet.net> wrote:

Yes. Few ways to do it, but graph.php + type "multi-port_bits” are the basic pieces. This is what we use to generate graphs here, dynamically: http://www.mkeix.net/traffic/details/

We’re going to lose most historical data (at least from a port -> participant level) when we migrate to the Arista anyway, unless someone is going to play RRD masseuse. Now would be the time. As Chris mentioned, PHP Weathermap is easily integrated, similar to the current Cacti methodology. (i.e.: point to RRD file on disk somewhere)

+1 there, thanks for the effort to keep historical data! :) one could probably rrdtool up some way to export/re-import data from cacti -> observium formatted rrd’s, but that may be a bit of effort, perhaps more than it’s worth. observium could be a valuable ‘tag-along’ to cacti then, even if that remains the authoritative traffic data source, purely from a ‘get more useful data’ perspective. afaict, we’re not really monitoring much currently beyond port level traffic? things like fabric utilization, memory, cpu, port error counters, DOM levels, etc, could all be helpful and essentially automagic with observium. -- Andrew Hoyos hoyosa@gmail.com
