Nope, other than community pressure to not fill your ports...

DSCP will be passed. The L3 packet shouldn't be mucked with at all in the MICE switches including TTL. Actually, it looks like something weird is going on with CNS' 10G it is bouncing back and forth between near zero and near 500M outbound since about 10:00 this morning, with little or no inbound traffic. I'm not sure if it is just a measurement error or what, but since I'm not seeing any router via MICE from CNS I think it is something more serious. But I'm not sure the 2G is real. I know there is a fiber cut up near Brainerd, the two events are probably related since much of CNS probably feeds through there... but the bouncing is odd if it's a plain-old cut.
But I'm not sure the 2G is real.
We've been close to 1.8 or 1.9 Gbps for the past few weeks so I'm reasonably sure about the 2 Gbps level last Thursday. Today's numbers are likely bogus because of the CNS issue. Dave, A CNS fiber that leads to the 511 Building was cut at 9:52AM this morning. (The redundant link isn't expect to be done for another few months.... Arrghh). The CNS switch should be running just fine, but there won't be any CNS connected routes at the exchange. I'm not sure why anything would be bouncing around...? Because they had a fiber cut. But they seem to be back up as of about 16:00, they look normal again, and seem to be announcing all their routes into the exchange again. I'm not sure what was going on with their port measurements though, it was probably a measurement glitch. Because, I don't think the exchange was actually sending 500Mb of real traffic at them when their link was down and there doesn't seem an inbound source of the traffic on any other port. So that sounds like a measurement glitch to me. On 8/15/11 18:23 CDT, Richard Laager wrote:

We typically change the MTU to the largest (reasonable) values supported by the platform when installing an ethernet switch. I'm not sure if it is the best strategy (feel free to tell me what I've gotten wrong), but it has worked out well so far. We mainly do this to improve the service for our customers: 1) We want to be sure that our customers can get a minimum MTU of 1500 (and 9000 jumbo) for their connections. We see this now and then in customer technical requirements for ethernet circuits. By increasing our MTU, I don't have to worry about the various encapsulation methods that we might use internally for them (MPLS, 802.1q tunneling, etc) reducing their available MTU below the limit; 2) It allows our customers to do their own encapsulation (L2TPv3, MPLS) in addition to ours and still keep 1500/9000 for their payload; 3) In the past we have seen vendor/customer confusion where they believe that MTU and ethernet frame size are the same, by having a little "cush" factor, we don't have to worry about being the bad guy who clobbered their packets if there is terminology confusion; 4) If our customers use Path MTU Discovery they can take advantage of larger MTU sizes and get greater efficiency for their traffic; 5) Many of the Cisco switches require a reboot to change MTU settings. By setting them to their maximum during the initial install we don't have to worry about a service-affecting reboot later if we need to increase it; 6) It doesn't seem to break anything. :-) Steve ######################################################################## To unsubscribe from the MICE-DISCUSS list, click the following link: http://lists.iphouse.net/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=MICE-DISCUSS&A=1

thanks Dan! hm… Dan's note made me realize that it's not the Old Days any more and that many of you don't know me at all. so my terse little request comes out of the blue. let me remedy that. i'm extra thankful that Dan fired off that note. i've been a fan and observer of MICE since the beginning, but except for lurking on the list and showing up at some of the meetings i haven't done a lick of work on this project. i'd be happy to pull a little harder on the oars in exchange for your allowing me to pay for your membership in ICANN and being one of your representatives. here's a link to my bio -- http://www.haven2.com/index.php/bio here's a link to my page on ICANN-wiki (where you can find out about all kinda ICANN stuff) -- http://icannwiki.com/index.php/Mike_O%27Connor you'll see on the ICANN page that i do a bunch of work on working groups -- mostly focused on the security and stability kinda stuff. my problem with the Business Constituency has always been that it is quite tilted towards the interests of intellectual property owners and large corporations fending off cybersquatters. it's not that i disagree with them, but i've always felt that the view of the business community should be broader than that. and besides, there's a whole 'nother constituency that's supposed to be looking out for the interests of intellectual property. so i've been toiling away for years trying to carry that broader agenda inside the constituency. but this past few months have seen the constituency backslide a bit. first with the way we were playing both sides of the fence in the US Congress on the introduction of new gTLDs and then with the SOPA/PIPA legislation. so i'm getting tired of the ambiguity. the nice thing about the ISP constituency is that their agenda is much less political and a lot better aligned with my interests. so there's a bit more of the story, and a better job of introducing myself to those of you who don't know me. sorry about that, mikey On Jan 22, 2012, at 9:08 AM, Dan Boehlke wrote:

You have my vote -----Original Message----- From: MICE Discuss [mailto:MICE-DISCUSS@LISTS.IPHOUSE.NET] On Behalf Of Mike O'Connor Sent: Sunday, January 22, 2012 10:49 AM To: MICE-DISCUSS@LISTS.IPHOUSE.NET Subject: Re: [MICE-DISCUSS] would MICE be willing to designate me as it's representative to ICANN? thanks Dan! hm… Dan's note made me realize that it's not the Old Days any more and that many of you don't know me at all. so my terse little request comes out of the blue. let me remedy that. i'm extra thankful that Dan fired off that note. i've been a fan and observer of MICE since the beginning, but except for lurking on the list and showing up at some of the meetings i haven't done a lick of work on this project. i'd be happy to pull a little harder on the oars in exchange for your allowing me to pay for your membership in ICANN and being one of your representatives. here's a link to my bio -- http://www.haven2.com/index.php/bio here's a link to my page on ICANN-wiki (where you can find out about all kinda ICANN stuff) -- http://icannwiki.com/index.php/Mike_O%27Connor you'll see on the ICANN page that i do a bunch of work on working groups -- mostly focused on the security and stability kinda stuff. my problem with the Business Constituency has always been that it is quite tilted towards the interests of intellectual property owners and large corporations fending off cybersquatters. it's not that i disagree with them, but i've always felt that the view of the business community should be broader than that. and besides, there's a whole 'nother constituency that's supposed to be looking out for the interests of intellectual property. so i've been toiling away for years trying to carry that broader agenda inside the constituency. but this past few months have seen the constituency backslide a bit. first with the way we were playing both sides of the fence in the US Congress on the introduction of new gTLDs and then with the SOPA/PIPA legislation. so i'm getting tired of the ambiguity. the nice thing about the ISP constituency is that their agenda is much less political and a lot better aligned with my interests. so there's a bit more of the story, and a better job of introducing myself to those of you who don't know me. sorry about that, mikey On Jan 22, 2012, at 9:08 AM, Dan Boehlke wrote:
Greetings,
Having known Mike for a long time, I know his work at ICANN would benefit the entire MICE community. I support Mike's proposal and would recommend that we allow mice to go forward with our designation and support. It is in our interests to have individuals from our community in Internet governance.
Thank you.

hi all,
i'm hunting for a different home-base in the ICANN scheme of things (long story, happy to share, but probably boring for y'all). right now i'm in the "Business constituency" which you can read about at http://www.bizconst.org/. i'm trying to swing over to the ISP constituency (http://www.ispcp.info/) mostly because it's a better fit for my interests, but also because the Business constituency is making me sick to my stomach and i don't want to be a part of that gang any more (another really long story).
so i was wondering if MICE (or any of you individual members) would be willing to designate me your ICANN representative so's i could switch. this will be a pretty light burden for y'all -- i'll pay all the expenses, give you reports on interesting stuff having to do with DNS and IP-address policy issues, collect your views, carry them off to ICANN, etc.
i just need a new place to stand inside of ICANN and you're the gang i'd like to stand with.
