Looking Glasses
by Richard Laager Sept. 27, 2011

Sept. 27, 2011

I'd like to see http://micemn.net/participants.html contain links to the carriers' looking glass websites, when they have one. Is that something we can do? I can certainly do some Googling and provide an initial diff for that page, if desired. Is there a looking glass running on the route servers? Re: Remote MICE members?

Sept. 21, 2011

> Frankly, I'm surprised at the outpouring of love for spanning-tree I don't know anyone that loves spanning-tree, most people have more of an abusive older-brother sort of relationship. I'd lean toward STP being a necessary evil in a L2 environment where physical control isn't absolute for all the reasons David mentioned. I also like a bunch of the things Andrew brought up, but don't have a good feel for what the administration would feel like. It seems like I've spent the last 20 years either being disappointed in the performance of simple designs or being disappointed by the unpredictability of complicated designs... Anyway, this morning I've changed the main Juniper switch bridge priority and it appears to have asserted itself as the root. Steve/Jay/Doug - can you guys confirm that things look correct on your switches, I'll send you the Juniper's current settings off-list. Beyond that we can evolve in the direction the group thinks is best. Remote MICE members?
by Steve Howard Sept. 21, 2011

Sept. 21, 2011

Hello, CNS has received a request from one of its customers for a direct connection to MICE. If the consensus is to move forward, we could haul the MICE VLAN to that customer (and presumably to any other CNS member or customer who wants a direct MICE connection). This could result in the MICE VLAN appearing at various places throughout the region. I think that this could be a good thing for MICE, but if not managed correctly, it has the potential to be troublesome for problem isolation. MICE already has remote switches at 511. Other exchanges often have switches connected throughout their city. In this case, it is a little of both – except that the individual remote connections could be farther away in different directions. Does that matter? Whether we add remote connections or not, I'd like to see us come up with a plan for spanning tree. It probably would be best to make sure that our spanning tree root is one of the MICE 10Gig switches (probably the main one?). Or, alternatively, we could disable/filter spanning tree altogether and do MAC filtering for loop prevention. I think that spanning tree has its limitations, but it is much easier to maintain then MAC filtering. It looks like the current spanning tree root is 00:0c:db:fe:af:00 which looks like a Brocade device. Hmmm... We might want to change that... What does everybody think? Are there better ways to do this? Mice routes via Northern Lights GigaPoP
by Jeremy Lumby Sept. 6, 2011

Sept. 6, 2011

I have a case where I am seeing 199.199.0.0/16 in BGP via MICE/Northern Lights GigaPoP. I have noticed that traffic to this network takes MICE, however the return traffic is coming in across one of my public Internet connections. I am assuming that either by choice, or by accident that they are not accepting my route via MICE/Northern Lights GigaPoP. I am wondering who would be the best person to chat with about this since MICE does not list a peering contact for Northern Lights GigaPoP in the participants page, and I realize that the correct peering contact might be another level or two deeper. "carrier choice" verbiage
by Ryan Goldberg Aug. 25, 2011

Aug. 25, 2011

I've got a customer moving into a building where the building owners/management is attempting to enforce carrier exclusivity; they are in bed with another carrier. I already have the customer's other two sites on-net. This would be a third, new site. My fiber is just outside of the building, and I want to be in it. The owners of the company (my customer) have a pretty strong hand, and are looking for verbiage to add to the lease basically stating they can use whatever carrier they want. Juniper Switch move
by Jay Hanke July 8, 2011

July 8, 2011

I think we're about ready to move onto the new switching platform. We currently have a 1G link between the 4500 and the EX virtual chassis. I believe that we're ready to start moving copper ports on to the new switch. The link between the switches is on port 0 so we can move the copper ports preserving the existing port numbers. ie port 1 old = port 1 new. SDN is planning to move to a 10G port sometime in August. We can leave them in place on the main switch until they are ready for the 10G port. FWR, the connection type on the MICE end will change from SC to LC when this change occurs. I think that CNS was planning to upgrade the link to the main switch to 10G. Steve is that still the case? There are two copper Ethernet links coming out of the back of each of the route servers. I propose we move one of the route servers to the new switch and then move the second route server after all the participants have moved off. Which port is the mgmt port? Objections/ideas? Cut scheduling, I think early morning in the middle of the week would be the best. Fwd: [arin-announce] 2011 Global IPv6 Survey Now Open
by David Farmer July 1, 2011

July 1, 2011

I would like to encourage everyone to full out this survey. Thanks -------- Original Message -------- Subject: [arin-announce] 2011 Global IPv6 Survey Now Open Date: Fri, 01 Jul 2011 09:59:54 -0400 From: ARIN <info(a)arin.net> To: arin-announce(a)arin.net As announced last year, after the 2010 survey results were presented, GNKS Consult is working with the RIPE NCC and NRO to repeat the global 2010 survey on the current and future use of IPv6. The IPv6 Deployment Monitoring Survey is now online, and we encourage all members of the ARIN community to participate. The survey is available at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/GlobalIPv6survey2011. The purpose of the survey is to develop a better understanding of where the community is moving, and what can be done to ensure the Internet community is ready for the widespread adoption of IPv6. There has been little change to the survey since it was carried out in 2009 (only RIPE and APNIC) and 2010 (global), which will make comparison of progress possible. The results of previous surveys showed that community participation does contribute to a better understanding: more than 90% of last year's over 1600 respondents indicated that they were interested in participating again in 2011. We encourage all organizations to participate in this survey, which we hope will establish a comprehensive view of present IPv6 penetration and future plans for IPv6 deployment. The survey is composed of 23 questions and can be completed in about 15 minutes. For those without IPv6 allocations or assignments, or who have not yet deployed IPv6, the questions will be fewer in number. Results of the IPv6 Deployment Monitoring Survey will be presented and discussed widely, with the support of your RIR. TechdotMN article on MICE

Akamai Traffic on MICE
by David Farmer June 7, 2011

June 7, 2011

The 10G Akamai stack at the University is having an affect. The University turned up routing from the GigaPOP to MICE on its 10G link Tuesday around 8pm. The new paths were also announced to the Akamai route collector around that time too. Akamai started using these new paths around 1:30 in the afternoon on Wednesday. The University's 10G link peaked a little over 1G around 9:30pm last night. The bottleneck is the 1G link between the CNS 10G switch and the 4500. It was saturated from about 6:30pm to 9:30pm at about 950Mbps. Some of us are organizing to rectify the situation ASAP. There are some workarounds that could help in the very short-term, yet this morning, and we are looking to get the new Juniper switches with 10G up-links installed ASAP However, the earliest that can happen it this afternoon, as the switches are down in Mankato with Jay. There is a plan to get them up to 511 by mid-afternoon. Also I'll be watching the links and can modify our announcement to the Akamai route collector if necessary. Things are going to be fluid today. I'll just say that this is the kind of problem I like to see, if you are going to have to deal with any problem. That is the problem of over succeeding. -- =============================================== David Farmer Email:farmer@umn.edu Networking & Telecommunication Services Office of Information Technology University of Minnesota 2218 University Ave SE Phone: 612-626-0815 Minneapolis, MN 55414-3029 Cell: 612-812-9952 =============================================== ######################################################################## To unsubscribe from the MICE-DISCUSS list, click the following link: http://lists.iphouse.net/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=MICE-DISCUSS&A=1

Re: New Member's Configured on BIRD
by David Farmer III May 25, 2011

May 25, 2011

In a way both are correct. The Northern Lights Gigapop (AS57) is the ISP transit provider AS operated by the University and is the AS peering at MICE. Northern Lights Gigapop is simply a DBA of the University. AS217 is the source AS for traffic from the University's campuses. AS1998 is the source AS for the State of MN and MNSCU's campuses. There are a number of other ASes that AS57 is transiting to MICE as well. I can create a new AS-set in the RADb containing the ASes that AS57 is transiting to MICE, if folks are interested let me know. Is anyone connected to MICE generating BGP or traffic filters from the RADb? Cacti Graph using SNMPv1?
by Justin Krejci May 25, 2011

May 25, 2011

'micemn-gateway-2.micemn.net - Traffic - Gi0/2' in Cacti is exhibiting signs of using SNMPv1 counters (frequent gaps at higher bandwidth usage) Is this a known issue? If not I presume someone at iphouse can fix this easily. Traffic between 10Gig & 1Gig Switches
by Steve Howard May 19, 2011

May 19, 2011

The traffic to/from the U shot up today. I'm guessing that is CDN related? The link between the CNS switch and the MICE switch shot up to ~850Mbps today. Too bad that is only a single gig connection! It is great to have the traffic on the exchange, but we should probably deal with this nearly saturated link fast. Here are a few possible solutions: 1) Add another Gig connection. We'd probably need to pay FWR for a cross-connect (CNS is paying for the first one) with this option; 2) Use one of the new Juniper switches with a 10Gig interface and connect that to a 10Gig interface on the existing MICE 10Gig switch, then move some of the 1Gig members over to those ports. This would require purchase of 10Gig optics for the Juniper and the existing 10Gig MICE switch; 3) Move some of the higher bandwidth MICE members to the 1Gig ports on the 10Gig switch. Would this increase the FWR cross-connect charges for those members if they are going from copper to fiber? 4) Encourage MICE members on the 1Gig switch to upgrade to a 10Gig connection; 5) Ask the U to not advertise some of the members on the 1Gig switch to CDNs (if that is the cause of the traffic load). This is a bummer if you are one of the networks that gets left out. I really don't like this option -- we are finally getting real traffic on the exchange and then we'd be cutting back. What does everybody think? Any other suggestions? ######################################################################## To unsubscribe from the MICE-DISCUSS list, click the following link: http://lists.iphouse.net/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=MICE-DISCUSS&A=1

MICE Traffic
by Jay Hanke May 19, 2011

May 19, 2011

We have seen a dramatic growth in traffic on the exchange. The GE link between the CNS remote switch and the Main switch is running about ~950 Mb/s. We're going to need to make some upgrades shortly to avoid degrading services. Perhaps more quickly than originally planned. We may need some volunteers and stuff depending on the course of action. MICE Presentation at Vaultas?
by Steve Howard May 17, 2011

May 17, 2011

Hello, I had an e-mail forwarded my way that indicates that MICE will be doing a presentation at John Unger's new data center in Alexandria next week. I'm curious, who is doing the presentation? What are the options to connect to MICE from Alexandria? Also, I was at an IPv6 presentation last week at the Tristate Operators Conference. The speaker asked about how many people were using IPv6. We were the only company that raised our hands. Sad. During the question/answer period I mentioned MICE and that you could get free IPv6 transit via Hurricane Electric if you are connected to MICE. Nobody indicated any interest. More sadness. At least they've now heard about MICE. Recruitment / Advertising to MICE
by Justin Krejci May 17, 2011

May 17, 2011

Hello List, US Internet is in the process of getting connected to the network. In fact I plan to pop down to FWR this evening still and plug in the cross connect on my way home. In any case I only became aware of MICE thru unrelated discussions with WIN who mentioned it to me and passed me Jay's contact info which brings me to the subject at hand, is there any effort or interest in making a more official recruitment effort to get networks and providers to join up? I realize MICE is still pretty new and fresh but it strikes me it is only as useful as the networks that are participating. I think it would be great if we got Comcast and Qwest (CenturyLink, whatever) in particular to join up as they have big local networks in town. I also scanned some of the archives and was interested in the whole CDN participation idea. Any news on that at all with Akamai or others for that matter? Also are there any plans on the table for future UG meetings for MICE? -Justin Krejci ######################################################################## To unsubscribe from the MICE-DISCUSS list, click the following link: http://lists.iphouse.net/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=MICE-DISCUSS&A=1
