MICE CNS Switch downtime
by Steve Howard Dec. 20, 2011

Dec. 20, 2011

Hello, CNS will be converting its MICE switch from AC to DC power and moving the switch to a new cabinet on the morning of 12/23 starting around 5:00AM. Service is expected to be down for about 15 minutes for members that are connected to that switch. This will affect MICE connectivity to the following MICE members: CNS Hurricane Electric Northern Lights GigaPOP/Univ of Minnesota Paul Bunyan Communications Wikstrom Telephone I'm sorry for the inconvenience. If you have any questions/issues, feel free to send me e-mail. Northern Light Gigapop Outage
by David Farmer Oct. 31, 2011

Oct. 31, 2011

We were making some scheduled changes this morning between 04:00 and 08:00, this caused the TCAM to blow on our router connected to MICE. We were partially recovered by about 12:30. However, we didn't get our MICE connectivity fixed until after rebooting that router, at about 15:00. We had a P1 case open with Cisco, and wanted them to pull as much info out of it before rebooting it. I know some of you probably got trouble tickets from this, we're sorry. And we'll try not to make the same mistakes again, but I can't promise we won't make new mistakes. ;) -- =============================================== David Farmer Email:farmer@umn.edu Networking & Telecommunication Services Office of Information Technology University of Minnesota 2218 University Ave SE Phone: 612-626-0815 Minneapolis, MN 55414-3029 Cell: 612-812-9952 =============================================== ######################################################################## To unsubscribe from the MICE-DISCUSS list, click the following link: http://lists.iphouse.net/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=MICE-DISCUSS&A=1

Participants List Web Page
by Richard Laager Oct. 21, 2011

Oct. 21, 2011

The participants.html web page is out-of-date. Given this is a volunteer-run exchange, I've done a bunch of updating work myself. (See the attachment.) I believe I have everything current and complete, except as noted below. This originally started because I wanted looking glass addresses listed. I've since changed my thinking on that. If you list a looking glass in your peeringdb.com entry, bgp.he.net (to which we already link) picks that up automatically. This saves us from having to maintain that data on the MICE participants page. Accordingly, I'd like to urge Visi to create a peeringdb.com record and list their Looking Glass URL. (No shaming implied... I don't have a looking glass running... yet.) Should the MICE AS have a peeringdb.com entry? We could list the route server there, for the same reason. Is there value in linking to the respective peeringdb.com links? If so, should the anchor text be the carrier's name, or a new column? We are still missing contacts for these networks: South Dakota Networks Dakota Carrier Network Northern Lights GigaPoP Compudyne MyTelepath Genesis Wireless/RevNetData Jaguar Communications NU Telecom Dakota Carrier Network was assigned two IPv4 addresses, but only one IPv6 address. I assume the IPv6 assignment was an oversight. Is Hurricane Electric still planning to upgrade to 10Gig? I see they have both 1Gig and 10Gig ports assigned. This weekend while diligently avoiding my wife's "honey-do list" I wrote a script to parse stats via telnet from Jeremy and Doug's excellent new looking glass. I didn't see any commands that would give the number of MICE peers, so that number is actually the number of gateways in the routing tables... and of course the total number of connected addresses is just for fun. My wife isn't impressed either, but I can impress my kids with graphs! One thing you could add would be this BGP Monitoring template - it baselines the # of prefixes for each BGP neighbor and then has additional lines for inbound/outbound updates. There was discussion on NANOG today about Akamai usage spiking because of Apple iOS updates. I tried to find the graph on MICE's Cacti page to see if it saw the same spike, but if it's there I couldn't find it. Can someone point it out to me? There's no DNS resolution set up on that router -- is that a BCP, or something that can be added? The possibility of of hijacking your DNS queries goes up from zero to nonzero when enabling DNS lookups on the router also it can cause delays on some commands when their are DNS resolution issues. Unless you have a specific reason to have DNS lookups enabled on a cisco, I prefer to have DNS lookups disabled. I didn't check what all commands are allowed with the rviews account but it could be locked down pretty tight to only the various show commands specific to BGP routing data. ------Original Message------ From: Frank Bulk Sender: MICE Discuss To: MICE-DISCUSS(a)LISTS.IPHOUSE.NET ReplyTo: MICE Discuss Subject: Re: [MICE-DISCUSS] New MICE Looking Glass Sent: Oct 10, 2011 9:44 PM There's no DNS resolution set up on that router -- is that a BCP, or something that can be added? Connection to Sungard: Not really a MICE question...

Hello, This isn't really a MICE question, but I figure somebody on the list would know the answer and I'd prefer to send the business to a MICE member. I have a customer that is looking to get to the Sungard data center on Energy Park Drive. Does anybody know of any reasonably priced ethernet connectivity to get there from 511? I've seen that when flood-pinging BSD boxes (but not Linux). If you can throttle the rate down (-i 0.1), rather than flood pinging, then the artifact may go away. > Sending 1000, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 69.147.218.1, timeout is 2 seconds: > !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! > !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.!!!!!!!!!! > !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! > !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! > !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! > !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! > !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! > !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ######################################################################## To unsubscribe from the MICE-DISCUSS list, click the following link: http://lists.iphouse.net/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=MICE-DISCUSS&A=1

Akamai Servers are in!

The Akamai servers are in! I'm going to be at 511 about 3 pm. If you have time and want to help out come on down! It looks like we're going to need a couple of rack mount PDUs. If you have one or two available please contact me. I think we're going to need about 12 outlets but I'm not sure exactly until I see the equipment. From the sounds of it the Akamai supplied strips might not fit in the enclosure. Thanks!
