i'm giving a talk at the HH Humphrey Institute TISP Forum you might be interested in
by Mike O'Connor Sept. 24, 2013

Sept. 24, 2013

hi all just a quick note to invite you to a talk that i'll be giving in a couple weeks over at the UofM. my first-ever public talk about ICANN stuff. here's the link to the Eventbright signup/description thingy https://www.eventbrite.com/event/8475601753/?ref=enivtefor001&invite=NDI3MD… details: 10-October 4-5:30pm The Wilkins Room, Humphrey School of Public Affairs 301 19th Ave. South, Minneapolis, MN 55455 all the "usual suspect" telecomm policy type people show up for these, so you might find it an interesting gang even if my talk is terrible. and the fresh-baked UofM cookies are always good. here's the blurb. t'would be great to see you there. mikey Event Details Registration is $10 at the door Checks payable to University of Minnesota Telecommunications and Information Society Policy Forum Internet Management and the Future of the Internet: New Top Level Domains Speaker: Mike O’Connor gofast.net Co-Founder and Newly Elected Member of the ICANN Generic Names Council No one argues with the idea that the Internet is at the center of broadband life. ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) is the international multi-stakeholder organization charged with the technical management of the names and numbers that tag our Internet traffic for safe delivery on the Net. The BIG NEWS from ICANN is that BIG CHANGE is on the way. The familiar small familyof top level domain names such as .COM, .NET, .GOV, .EDU, will grow to 1200 top level domain names in the next few years. Over the past 20 years, very few names were added but in the next year alone about 500 additions are planned. Is this good news? Is this bad news? Is the glass half full or half empty? Who will benefit? Who might lose? How might this affect your ISP? How might this affect telecommunications providers? Will trust be affected? As an ICANN “insider” Mike will share his views and moderate discussion to help us understand the big changes ahead in this part of the Internet. Please join us for this important discussion. Registration is $10 at the door Checks payable to University of Minnesota The idea behind this forum is simple and essential: purposeful exchange on key issues with engaged stakeholders to create a better information future. Re: MICE Congestion Issues
by Jeremy Lumby Sept. 19, 2013

Sept. 19, 2013

The problem is X2 versus SFP+ optics. I would be happy to donate, the problem is I only have X2 optics, and no SFP+ laying around. If we moved the GigaPoP, that would solve the immediate problem, so the trick would be if someone had one SFP+ module to facilitate the move. -----Original Message----- From: MICE Discuss [mailto:MICE-DISCUSS@LISTS.IPHOUSE.NET] On Behalf Of Mike Horwath Sent: Wednesday, September 18, 2013 3:59 PM To: MICE-DISCUSS(a)LISTS.IPHOUSE.NET Subject: Re: [MICE-DISCUSS] MICE Congestion Issues On Sep 18, 2013, at 2:51 PM, Richard Laager <rlaager(a)WIKTEL.COM> wrote: > On Wed, 2013-09-18 at 14:47 -0500, Steve Howard wrote: >> Wouldn't it make more sense to move Akamai to the CNS switch? i.e. >> Move one instead of two? DFS WIFI Interference
by David Farmer June 19, 2013

June 19, 2013

The University received a courtesy call from the Doppler radar people at KSTP about interference on the 5.57G band they use for sever weather tracking. Their next step is to call the FCC, but they would rather whoever is causing this interference to stop, rather than have people's gear confiscated, fines or whatever. We know at least a few of you have wireless gear in the Dinkytown area thought we would pass along a note along to all of you. I'm sure most of you know this, but just in case you don't, if you are running radio gear at or around 5.57 Ghz (Wifi channels 108, 112) you need pay attention to this issue, especially in this part of town with KSTP's radar nearby. There are conditions to the opening of this spectrum for public use that require shutdown in the presence of Doppler radio. (often referred to as DFS) (Publication Number: 443999 Rule Parts: 15E" <http://apps.fcc.gov/kdb/GetAttachment.html?id=dV24P2kaxB%2BkKzIPZxHxHg%3D%3D>. /FCC <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Communication_Commission>/. October 5, 2009. "Devices must be professionally installed when operating in the 5470 – 5725 MHz band") Since KSTP's radar facility is just up the street from campus, it has been our experience that it is best just not to use those frequencies at all, they seem to run the radar all the time. The dish they use has very high gain, so something as small signal-wise as Wifi or cordless microphones could be the issue. So, the source might not be outside and may not be very powerful. The vector for this interference is parallel to University Ave, and is likely high above the ground, maybe as much as 150ft, but given the elevation changes in this part of town that could be misleading. We are double checking all our gear and with our other departments within the University. We were thinking maybe the Chateau or one of the other several new apartment buildings in the area could be the source and thought we should give you all a heads up. Thanks. ######################################################################## To unsubscribe from the MICE-DISCUSS list, click the following link: http://lists.iphouse.net/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=MICE-DISCUSS&A=1

IPv6 routing issue
by David Farmer April 3, 2013

April 3, 2013

This morning at approximately 1:30 our peering session with HE reset, I assume for some kind of normal maintenance on their end. This triggered a weird issue on our end. Because of some crufty route policy we were preferring the routes we learned from the MICE route server over the routes we learned directly from HE. And for some reason the routes we were learning from the route server had a different link-local address associated with them than the routes we learned directly. And this address no longer seems to be valid, and this caused traffic to be black holed. From below FE80::224:38FF:FEA7:EA03 - address on routes learned from MICE RS FE80::224:38FF:FEA7:EA36 - address on routes direct from HE I changed my route policy to ignore the routes from HE through the MICE Route Server and things are working again. I'm not sure what changed and why the routes from the MICE Route server have an bogus link-local address. But I though I would warn you all. Integra's Status
by Jeremy Lumby March 25, 2013

March 25, 2013

Just checking to see if anyone knows what is going on with Integra. After the issues they had over a week ago, they have not responded to emails I sent to their peering address, as well as they never seemed to give a clear indication of what the issue really was in the first place. I was running RTP across the MICE connection to them at the time that they supposedly had 50% packet loss. I sure would have expected a whole lot of complaints if there was 50% loss. I never got a single complaint. Interesting route to Akamai
by Jeremy Lumby March 22, 2013

I was a little interested in seeing which Akamai cluster would feed my Charter home internet connection if I decided to stream NCAA basketball. A quick packet capture revealed a very familiar IP address. However when I tracerouted to it, I was surprised to see it go through the University transit MICE, and then loop back on USinternet to get to the MICE Akamai cluster. 2 1 - 66.191.136.9 3 2 - 10.149.234.1 4 3 1 96.34.25.200 dtr01rsmtmn-tge-0-1-1-2.rsmt.mn.charter.com 5 3 1 96.34.27.182 crr02stcdmn-tge-0-4-0-1.stcd.mn.charter.com 6 3 1 96.34.2.136 bbr01stcdmn-bue-3.stcd.mn.charter.com 7 3 1 96.34.1.149 bbr02chcgil-bue-1.chcg.il.charter.com 8 3 1 96.34.3.11 prr01chcgil-bue-4.chcg.il.charter.com 9 4 2 64.57.20.49 ge-9-0-4.0.chic0.tr-cps.internet2.edu 10 4 - 64.57.21.122 11 5 3 206.108.255.126 as57-2.micemn.net 12 5 4 206.108.255.19 g1-43.usi-cr03-mpls.usinternet.com 13 6 4 216.17.48.25 v115.usi-cr02-mpls.usinternet.com 14 7 - 216.17.31.194 15 8 5 23.15.4.8 a23-15-4-8.deploy.akamaitechnologies.com ######################################################################## To unsubscribe from the MICE-DISCUSS list, click the following link: http://lists.iphouse.net/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=MICE-DISCUSS&A=1

It looks like Akamai had a nice increase in traffic today starting around ~11AM.
