Public Stats Aggregate View
by Brady Kittel Feb. 27, 2014

Feb. 27, 2014

Any update on when we'll be adding the aggregate ingress+egress stats to the main page of the MICE site as was discussed in the minutes for the last UG? I only ask as I'd like to update MICE on the Wikipedia article listing IX's by total throughput but I need the public graph to cite for the update. Currently they're listing MICE at 10Gbit for throughput. ######################################################################## To unsubscribe from the MICE-DISCUSS list, click the following link: http://lists.iphouse.net/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=MICE-DISCUSS&A=1

AS33125 (Spiralight) removal from MICE
by Andrew Hoyos Feb. 20, 2014

Feb. 20, 2014

Hi folks, As you may know, Wisconsin Independent Network (WIN) recently purchased the most of the assets of Spiralight Network, and they have been working to fold those into their network. As such, the AS33125 MICE port was turned off this morning, and will stay down. Just a FYI for folks, to clean up sessions/route servers/member info page, etc. AS33125 will continue to operate as Bug Tussel Wireless (which was a sister company to Spiralight), however, just with a Wisconsin footprint. I think we should revisit the topic of how to better protect MICE from these Layer 2 issues that we have had a few of in the history of MICE. I feel that stability is extremely important, especially when it comes to attracting new members, as well as getting existing members to increase their capacity. I know that many of the Layer 2 security measures that are possible for the exchange increase the amount of administrative time that needs to be put into the exchange, however I feel it may be very well worth the extra work when adding/maintaining members' connections I was looking through my log files, and during the outage, I saw a bunch of entries stating: %IPV6-3-CONFLICT: Router FE80::21D:71FF:FE98:74C0 on GigabitEthernet0/2 has conflicting ND settings I am not very familiar with this error, and not sure if it was just as a result of the degraded conditions on MICE, or if it had something to do with the cause. Charter Update: I am providing this update to let others know what I went through after the outage to get re-connected to Charter in the event that others are seeing similar issues, hopefully it can cut a lot of troubleshooting time. -When the outage happened yesterday I shut down my MICE port. -All traffic shifted to my other upstreams as expected, other than Charter -I could not pass 2 way traffic with anyone on Charter's network. -Some traceroutes from Charter's side showed that traffic heading to me was hitting their peering router that was connected to MICE, even though my BGP session with them had been down for hours -Charter's peering router showed that my BGP session was still established through MICE from prior to the outage starting. -Charter attempted to clear the BGP connection to me as well as do a shutdown on my neighbor statement, however whenever they looked at it, it still showed established with the timer reflecting it being up prior to the MICE outage. -I turned my MICE port back up, and return traffic from Charter started making it to me, despite BGP being down from my point of view. -It took Charter removing all of their neighbor statements to me, and re-entering them before BGP properly re-established in both directions. -The entire time our IPv6 session worked as expected -We are both running Cisco hardware, I believe they have a 9K and I have a 7206VXR-G2 I hope this helps others out with troubleshooting in the future Jeremy -----Original Message----- From: MICE Discuss [mailto:MICE-DISCUSS@LISTS.IPHOUSE.NET] On Behalf Of David Farmer Sent: Wednesday, February 19, 2014 5:58 PM To: MICE-DISCUSS(a)LISTS.IPHOUSE.NET Subject: Re: [MICE-DISCUSS] Mice Issues On 2/19/14, 17:45 , Jeremy Lumby wrote: > Is anyone else having issues with connectivity to Charter? "Toward Efficiencies in Canadian Internet Traffic Exchange" - a good read for us too, i think
by Mike O'Connor Jan. 29, 2014

Jan. 29, 2014

hi all, i was thinking this might be interesting for y’all, even though it’s got a Canadian slant. lots of their arguments apply to us as well, no? i’m reluctant to hit this list with a 2.5 mB attachment, so here’s a link http://www.cira.ca/assets/Uploads/Toward-Efficiencies-in-Canadian-Internet-… here are a few teaser bullet points from the first page Key benefits: By reducing reliance on costly international data transit, additional ISPs will reduce networks’ ongoing operational costs. These cost savings will flow to Canadian Internet users, and unnecessary export of capital will be reduced. By providing high-speed domestic links, additional ISPs will increase the amount of bandwidth available to Canadian users, mitigating networks’ bandwidth shortages and removing networks’ incentives to impose bandwidth throttling and usage caps. By favoring shorter and more direct routes, additional ISPs will reduce network latency, improving the performance of new services like video and could-based applications. By allowing Canadian data to remain in Canada as much as possible and as often as possible, additional ISPs will reduce the risk of Canadian data becoming subject to foreign laws and practices. By increasing the richness and density of connections between Canadian networks, additional ISPs will increase the reliability of internet access in Canada and its resilience to disaster and attack. among other things, there’s an interesting discussion of Governance Structures about midway through this piece. there’s a Challenges and Responses section right after that. as a retired “suit,” i found it a good read. ;-) mikey PHONE: 651-647-6109, FAX: 866-280-2356, WEB: www.haven2.com, HANDLE: OConnorStP (ID for Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.) ######################################################################## To unsubscribe from the MICE-DISCUSS list, click the following link: http://lists.iphouse.net/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=MICE-DISCUSS&A=1

Update: We ran into a snag the other night (12/18) with this maintenance and had to move this event until after the holidays. As of 11:30AM today (1/3) we have our 10Gbps connection up, as well as BGP, to the MICE Juniper router. I apologize for the lack of updates on this. At any rate, the 10Gbps connection to MICE is up and happy at the moment. Please let us know if we missed anything. Thanks in advance. Port Anonymity
by Reid Fishler Dec. 12, 2013

Dec. 12, 2013

Hello MICE Persons- The SC has discussed recent requests for protection of port statistics, and we have decided to adapt the method that Netnod in Sweden tackles this issue. At any time, any IX member may choose to make their port anonymous in the graphs and logs. Because the ports are currently labeled, we will allow allow members, upon request, to move to another port at the time that they remove the identity from their port. This will allow any network that does not wish its statistics to be public to be satisfied, while allowing the members to see have access to statistics, in this, a cooperative exchange without dedicated staff. Any members who wish to have their port anonymized, please contact me and I will make sure that it is done. Also, a reminder: port statistics of other members are NOT for sharing outside of your own company without permission from the other involved networks. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to post. Frank, To answer your question, no idea. We don't usually track individual events or usage surges. Could be a peer had a down on net presence, someone turned up a new customer with demand, a small apple iOS event, etc. If this is a problem I can, but doesn't seem like it. just FYI -- ISOC on IXPs
by Mike O'Connor Dec. 3, 2013

Dec. 3, 2013

hi all, thought you might be interested in this piece about the economic impact of IXPs in Latin America. mikey http://www.internetsociety.org/news/new-study-reveals-how-internet-exchange… New Study Reveals How Internet Exchange Points Spur Internet Growth in Latin America 03 December 2013 Joint Internet Society and Universidad de San Andrés report demonstrates significant cost and performance gains from IXP development in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and Ecuador [Montevideo, Uruguay] – The Internet Society recently published the results of a study that demonstrates the far-reaching economic and societal benefits of establishing Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) in emerging markets. The study, commissioned by the Internet Society and conducted by Professor Hernan Galperin of the Universidad de San Andrés in Argentina, examined the critical cost and performance benefits of IXPs in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Ecuador – countries on the leading edge of Internet growth in Latin America. Analogous with the role that international airports play in airline traffic, IXPs serve as critical hubs for data traffic exchange in the global Internet infrastructure. Over 350 IXPs around the world enable local Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and Internet backbone carriers to efficiently and cost-effectively exchange Internet traffic. Many emerging markets do not have well-established IXPs, forcing domestic Internet traffic onto long-distance international links, resulting in significantly higher costs and quality of service challenges. This new study identifies the positive impact that IXPs have made, including reduced telecommunications costs, faster and better local data exchange, and local technical capacity development. For example: To date, nine IXPs are operational in Argentina as part of the Cabase system that was created in 1998, connecting over 80 network operators. Internet transit costs have been reduced from USD $500 per Mbps per month in one city to about USD $40 per Mbps per month. Service providers have been able to expand their networks and quality of service. In 2004, the Comitê Gestor da Internet (CGI) launched an initiative called PTT Metro to create IXPs across Brazil, starting with their first IXP in São Paulo. As of April 2013, there were 22 IXPs in operation, covering 16 of Brazil’s 26 states. On aggregate, the IXPs associated with the PTT Metro initiative are exchanging over 170Gbps at peak hours, and providing better and faster connectivity to regions of Brazil that had poor Internet service. In Ecuador, international transit costs hover around USD $100 per Mbps per month. Local traffic can be exchanged at the IXP in Quito (NAP.EC) for as little as USD $1 per Mbps per month. Without an IXP, operators would exchange local traffic through international transit routes and the additional wholesale costs for local ISPs would be USD $7.2 million per year. The Colombian exchange point, NAP Colombia, started in 2000 in response to frequent disruptions in the domestic backhaul network and international links. By exchanging traffic locally, and later by installing content caches at the IXP, local ISPs were able to reduce their dependence on international routes, thus reducing costs and, most importantly, increasing service reliability. “This study highlights the critical role that IXPs are playing in Latin America – from human capacity and network development to better quality of service and increased uptake of services,” said Sebastian Bellagamba, Regional Bureau Director for Latin America and the Caribbean at the Internet Society. “Offering more than just cost and performance benefits, well-run IXPs serve as a catalyst to dramatically enrich a country’s Internet ecosystem, opening a new world of possibilities with comparably minimal investment. We appreciate the collaboration with Professor Galperin and hope that this study will help inform the dialogue among government, business, and technology leaders of emerging countries to show them the benefits that IXPs can provide for developing partnerships for Internet growth in the region.” Lead author of the study Hernan Galperin stated, “This report shows the important role that IXPs have played in the development of the Internet in Latin America. This role is likely to become more important as countries in the region address existing challenges such as network security, the improvement in the quality of services, and the reduction in access prices.” The study was conducted as part of the Internet Society’s Internet Traffic Exchange Programme. This programme aims to foster robust, efficient, and cost-effective Internet interconnection environments in emerging economies, and furthers the Internet Society’s overall mission to promote the open development, evolution, and use of the Internet for the benefit of all people throughout the world. The full study in English and Spanish is available for download at http://www.internetsociety.org/doc/connectivity-latin-america-and-caribb.... Funding for this study was provided in part by Google under the IXP Toolkit & Best Practices Grant Project. About the Internet Society The Internet Society is the trusted independent source for Internet information and thought leadership from around the world. With its principled vision and substantial technological foundation, the Internet Society promotes open dialogue on Internet policy, technology, and future development among users, companies, governments, and other organizations. Someday we'll hit 30Gbps, but not today - the massive spike in MICE traffic in the graphs at 2am this morning is just an artifact of the daylight savings switch. by Jay Hanke Oct. 14, 2013

Oct. 14, 2013

We are installing a new switch to replace the existing Mankato Networks Remote switch and increasing the uplink to 10G due to rapid traffic growth. Several members will see a brief outage when their uplinks are moved. If you have NOT been notified and would like to move this afternoon please email me. We are only moving the carriers we have notified off-list. -- Jay Hanke CTO, CCIE #19093 Mankato Networks LLC PO Box 54 619 S Front St Mankato, MN 56001-3838 Google 530-618-2398 jayhanke(a)mankatonetworks.net http://www.mankatonetworks.com http://www.neutralpath.net ######################################################################## To unsubscribe from the MICE-DISCUSS list, click the following link: http://lists.iphouse.net/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=MICE-DISCUSS&A=1
